Chapter Eleven

“Holy shit. Why didn’t you tell me?”

She rubbed her nose with the back of her hand. “I didn’t think you’d understand.”

Interpretation: I didn’t think you’d care. “Elryn, Elryn—I gave my DNA so you could survive the Elfshot, don’t you think I’d care if someone did something to hurt you?”

Elryn shook her head. “But there’s nothing you can do about it. Odin gave me a death sentence.”

“Well, Odin is going to have to change that,” I grumbled.

“He’s the All-Father. He can do whatever he wants.”

“Not to my friends and family, he doesn’t.” I set my jaw. “Does Loki know?”

“Yeah, and I don’t know why he didn’t blab it to everyone. He and I haven’t seen eye-to-eye in the past.”

“Ya think?” I smiled wryly and she snorted. “Look, now that I know this, we’ll have to play hardball with Odin, that’s all.”

“Playing hardball with a god will probably get you killed—especially when it comes to the All-Father.”

“‘Probably’—that suggests the possibility that I won’t get killed.” I winked at her. “I’ll take those odds for twenty, Bob.”

Elryn chuckled. “Did I ever tell you that you are a good friend?”

I grinned. “No. But it’s been implied, occasionally.”

“Well, you are. If I weren’t attracted to women, Luna and I would be scrapping over you.”

I shook my head. “I wouldn’t want to even guess who might win. Despite her sweetness and light, she’s one tough wolf.”

“I know.” Elryn nodded, wiping away her tears. “She gets that from her dad.”

“I don’t know. Her mom is one tough wolf, from what I hear.”

Elryn chuckled, despite the tears. “You don’t carry Kleenex on you, do you?”

I shook my head. “Sorry, but it’s usually not in my ‘Storm Asgard’ kit.”

She chuckled quietly. “Figures. You didn’t expect me to go all emo.”

“No, no I didn’t.” I nodded. I took a deep breath. “How long do you have?”

“Well, I’m here, so that stays the death sentence. But if he cuts me off from my power here, my magic will fade and I’ll become mortal. I’ll age and die like any mortal. Only I wouldn’t go to Helheim or Fólkvangr. I would be a ghost, haunting whatever barrow or copse was near where I died.”

Now, seeing as I was mortal, albeit a very long lived one, I didn’t think aging and mortality was a big deal. But, I could see how it would horrify any Elf. As a human with Elven heritage, I was kind of surprised that I had inherited a longer lifespan than even most wizards along with the Dark Elven magic. Wizards or mages (as the stuck-up ones call themselves) usually lived about three times as long as a normal human. So, if we say that Normals live to anywhere between 75 and 100, most wizards could expect a lifespan between 225 to 300 years. If they didn’t get killed first—which often happens. My dad, Evrardin, had fought alongside Elryn to keep the Drow from invading Earth, only somehow got himself killed. My mom, Sabine, who was a flower child from the 60s, was with my dad when he died, and pregnant with me.
